Dr. Newman is one of the nation's leading experts in the fields of occupational and environmental medicine and pulmonary medicine.

 

He is the Professor of Environmental & Occupational Health and Epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado at Denver/Health Sciences Center.

 

He is the former Head of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at National Jewish Medical and Research Center. And, Dr. Newman is the Founding Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Education and Research Center (ERC) that trains occupational and environmental health professionals. 

 

Dr. Newman co-founded Axion Health to simplify data-entry tasks and establish prevention strategies executed through advanced technology. He leads the Axion Health Medical Advisory Board and full-time medical content team. Axion Health is the only company in the field of workforce health management software that maintains a medical review board of nationally recognized knowledge leaders.

 

In addition to his role at Axion Health, Dr. Newman conducts research and teaches medical students, gradutate students, post-doctoral trainees, and is a popular lecturer and visiting Professor at major international university medical schools.

 

He has published more than 200 scientific papers, chapters, and reviews in the medical literature, including more than 140 research studies as well as invited commentaries and scholarly reviews in Science, The New England Journal of Medicine, and The Lancet.

Dr. Newman has more than 20 years of experience in designing and practically implementing medical surveillance programs in the workplace and in communities where there has been potential exposure to hazardous substances.

He has consulted extensively with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its contractors, has served as an advisor to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and its counterpart in Quebec Province, Canada, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), labor organizations, worker groups, and many large and small corporations.

 

Dr. Newman's work on immune system blood tests for beryllium allergy has revolutionized the approach to the detection of beryllium disease in many industries including defense and nuclear weapons, alloy manufacture, recycling, aeronautics, metal machining, construction trades, and dental laboratories.

 

He refined and helped validate the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test as a practical tool for screening for beryllium sensitization and has helped influence new federal regulations and public policy in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, Dr. Newman has conducted clinical research regarding asbestos, silica, mold, metals, toxic chemicals, and the causes of work-related asthma.

 

Dr. Newman is a graduate of Amherst College (BA), Cornell University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (MA, Social Psychology), Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (MD), Emory University School of Medicine (Internal Medicine), and University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (Fellowship, Pulmonary Science and Critical Care Medicine). He is board certified in internal medicine and in pulmonary medicine.
